چکیده

We investigate the feasibility of cohesive theories of fracture, in conjunction with the direct simulations of shear-load dominated fracture, to numerically reproduce the inter-sonic crack propagation in unidirectional graphite-epoxy composite plates [1]. The particular configuration contemplated in this study refers to the experiments performed by Coker and Rosakis [2, 3]. The numerical simulations capture closely the experimentally observed double shock wave structure, the large-scale contact along the fracture surfaces as well as the “hot spots” generated by frictional heating. The crack initiation and crack speed history are accurately predicted, without invoking any additional criteria, as a direct out-coming of calculations.

Subsonic and Intersonic Dynamic Crack Growth in Unidirectional Composites

Some recent experimental observations of highly dynamic crack growth events in thick unidirectional graphite fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix composite plates are presented. The composite plates were symmetrically (mode-I) and asymmetrically (mode-II) loaded in a one-point bend configuration with an edge pre-notch machined in the fiber direction. The lateral shearing interferometric technique of c...

Three-dimensional modeling of intersonic shear-crack growth in asymmetrically loaded unidirectional composite plates

An anisotropic cohesive model of fracture is applied to the numerical simulation of Coker and Rosakis experiments (2001). In these experiments, a unidirectional graphite–epoxy composites plate was impacted with a projectile, resulting in an intersonic shear-dominated crack growth. The simulations account for explicit crack nucleation––through a selfadaptive remeshing procedure––crack closure an...

Shear Dominated Transonic Interfacial Crack Growth in a Bimaterial-i. Experimental Observations

In this work we describe a series of impact experiments performed on PMMA/4340 steel edge cracked bimaterial plates. Specimens were impacted at 20 m SK’ in a one point bend configuration using a high speed gas gun. Dynamic interfacial crack propagation was observed using the optical method of Coherent Gradient Sensing and high speed photography. Very high crack tip accelerations (IO’ m SF’) and...

A New Numerical Procedure for Determination of Effective Elastic Constants in Unidirectional Composite Plates

In this paper a composite plate with similar unidirectional fibers is considered. Assuming orthotropic structure, theory of elasticity is used for investigating the stress concentration. Also, complex variable functions are utilized for solving the plane stress problems. Then the effective characteristics of this plate are studied numerically by using ANSYS software. In this research a volume e...

Modeling dynamic crack propagation in fiber reinforced composites including frictional effects

Dynamic crack propagation in a unidirectional carbon/epoxy composite is studied through finite element analyses of asymmetric impact (shear loading) of a rod against a rectangular plate. A finite deformation anisotropic visco-plastic model is used to describe the constitutive response of the composite. Crack propagation is simulated by embedding zero thickness interface element along the crack ...
